Why Good Nutrition is Important to Your Dog's Health

Do you want your dog, your best friend, to be happy and healthy? Of course you do because you care about your dog. Just like humans your dog needs a nutritious diet plan to stay healthy and insure a long happy life.

A hungry or undernourished dog is an unhappy dog. He needs nutritious food including basic vitamins and minerals important to creating his good health and longevity.

Poor nutrition not only has physical effects such as low energy levels, bone and joint disorders, skin aliments and can open the door to other physical situations. But it also can also cause psychological problems such as stress, irritability, and depression resulting in behavioral problems like excessive barking, chewing, lethargy, etc. Consult with your veterinarian about the best diet for your dog.

Your vet can also suggest additional supplements for your dog to combat issues like poor or dry skin conditions, allergies, arthritis, etc.

Proper routine exercise is essential for all dogs just as it is for humans. A healthy diet will give a dog the stamina, ability and desire for regular exercise. When he feels good he looks forward to his walks and play sessions and time spent with you.

Some dogs may require more grooming than others but all dogs need healthy skin and coats. A healthy diet goes a long way to keeping his coat shiny and manageable. Many times a poor coat is the result of dry skin or skin allergies. The proper food for your dog will help to prevent these problems. A change in dog food may make a big difference in your pet in his attitude, how he looks and feels.

Quality dog food geared to your dog's needs can also affect the size and amount of waste outputs. Less fillers means less waste which translates into less cleanup in your yard.

Be sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink at all times but especially at feeding times. Drinking water will help with his eating and digestion as well as keeping hydrated.

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is also critical for dogs as poor oral care can lead to other more serious problems such as infections, heart problems to mention a few. Make sure to choose a dry dog food that will also clean your dog's teeth.
Dog biscuits are available too to not only clean the teeth but freshen your dog's breath. Use canned dog food sparingly to reduce the risk of plague and tartar buildup.

Dogs like treats now and then but don't over do it. Too many treats and overfeeding can cause obesity in your dog. You need to watch your dog's weight closely to prevent him from getting overweight. Just an additional pound or two can make a big difference in your dog's health.

Work closely with your veterinarian in selecting the proper diet for your dog and on any special needs he may have. Remember having a happy dog is maintaining a balance of healthy food, routine exercise and lots of love from you!
